Croatia - Tie
Now that I’ve decided on my next travel destination, one of my favorite parts is learning more about the country before I go.
While researching, I often come across unexpected discoveries.
One of those discoveries was learning that the necktie is said to have originated in Croatia.
The origin of the necktie is believed to date back to the 17th century, when Croatian soldiers wore cloth tied around their necks as part of their uniform.
Their distinctive style caught the attention of people in France, where this neckwear came to be known as the cravat, a word derived from “Croat.”
The cravat later became fashionable in the French court, and was eventually adopted in England as part of men’s formal attire, gradually evolving into the modern necktie we know today.
Looking back at its origins, it is interesting to see how much the meaning and role of the necktie have changed over time.
People from that era might find today’s neckties quite fascinating—or perhaps a little strange.
By the way, I bought a lovely striped necktie while I was there.
If you ever have the chance to visit Croatia, be sure to take a look at their neckties as well—they make a wonderful souvenir or travel keepsake.
